US ARMY WWII
U.S. Army 12th Cavalry, WWII | KIA 2/13/1945 Battle of Luzon, Philippines | Granbury Cemetery

The day after Sgt. Spoon turned 25, he was killed in action, in the Battle of Luzon, in the Philippines. His father, Fred Spoon, received a letter from John J. Hardin, Commanding Officer of group B 12th Cav. Expressing his deepest sympathy, and said “Curtis was a splendid soldiering leader of men” That, “he would be missed by everyone who knew him, not only because of his leadership, but because he was always cheerful under the most difficult circumstances.” He went on to explain that Curtis, was on a mission with his platoon in Manila, when he was killed. “ He was leading an attack on an enemy position, when a small Filipino boy came rushing out to greet the yanks, saying his sister had been shot by the Japs, and was lying in the street.” Sgt. Curtis Spoon, “ made a desperate attempt to save the girl’s life and in doing so, was mortally wounded.” He was withdrawn from the area quickly, and treated. The letter from the Commanding officer ended with, “ He lived for a few minutes, and all the time remained cheerful. Your name was the last word he uttered.”
Sgt. Spoon had also won the Silver Star a couple of months earlier for gallantry in action against the enemy at Leyte Province Philippine Islands.
