SPC Larry Rothel, had received the soldiers medal in Dec. of 1970. Risking his life to save another soldier that his helicopter crew was rescuing. The story appeared in the Hood County news. Sadly, just 5 months later another article would appear in the Hood County News announcing his death from being shot down on a mission in Vietnam. He was a door gunner, and made the decision to extend his tour in Vietnam by 2 months, in order to get discharged early when he would return. He never made it home. He gave his life fighting for our freedom.
