US NAVY WWII
USS Savannah | KIA: 9/11/1943 Battle of Salerno | Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery
The date September 11th, often brings sorrowful memories of that fateful Tuesday morning. Rewind the clock 58 years and it is another story of tragic loss. Seaman First Class Roy E. Thomason served in the United States Navy on board the USS Savannah, when his gun turret was hit by an enemy aerial bomb; killing all occupants, in the battle of Salerno. Thomason was killed in action on September 11th, 1943, he was just 19 years old. Astonishingly, Thomason’s parents received a letter written the day before he was killed, informing them not to send his Christmas package, they had hoped this meant that he would soon return home.
