“I am at the front lines these days, and believe me it’s pretty rough” is what Cpl. James Bills tells his family, in what will be his last letter home. Written on the 14th of March 1944 just 4 days before he was killed in action at Casino, Italy, Cpl. Bills, continues to say That “ Every time I start to do anything the shells start coming over and I have to run for my fox hole, you can imagine what fun that is”
On March 18th, according to After Action Reports filed by the 155th Artillery, it was around 12:50 when another round of enemy artillery begin to pour into the area of Cpl. Bills gun position. The results were deadly. At least 9 casualties within the first few rounds. One of those being Cpl. Bills. His last letter ended with, please write me a few lines, Love, James.
He was a graduate of Granbury High School, class of 1937
