WWII Pilot on B-17G "Dixie Rebel" | KIA 7/25/1946 Missing in the Line Of Duty
Harney Estes Jr. served as a Colonel & Pilot on B-17G "Dixie Rebel" #44-83686, 315th Composite Wing, Headquarters 5th Air Force, U.S. Army Air Force. B-17G #44-83686 took off, with a crew of 6 & 6 passengers, from Nichols Field, Manila, Philippines on an administrative flight to Kanoya, Japan. After landing at Naha, Okinawa to refuel they took off again for their final destination of Kanoya. A radio report after takeoff from them noted they were approximately 75 miles north of Okinawa and west of the Island of Oklnoerabu Shlma. They were not seen nor heard from again and are believed to have crashed into the sea for an unknown reason.
Harney was declared "Missing" in the "Line Of Duty" after World War II had ended.
He was actively serving during the Occupation of Japan.
